Course Descriptions
Youth Development-
Youth Development begins with you! Youth Development is the foundation of successful after school programs. Through this interactive workshop, participants will learn the five core components they can focus on immediately to build the culture of Youth Development within their group. Participants will also engage in group activities allowing them to assess the current atmosphere of Youth Development at the site. Through various hands-on activities, participants will evaluate the impact of messages youth receive and explore the research-based Community Network for Youth Development (CNYD) best practice model!
After School Homework-
What does homework look like in the after school setting? Come and learn strategies for creating a productive and effective homework time! Through this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to make homework time appropriate for after school. Let’s make it fun and interactive by incorporating: incentive and monitor systems, effective communication systems with program stakeholders, classroom and behavior management systems, and after homework centers. Participants will walk away feeling confident about their leadership during an after school homework component.
After School Supervision and Risk Management-
This may be one of most effective trainings you can provide for your staff.
Participants will understand what good, effective supervision is, and what it looks like in the after school setting. Participants will learn the importance of documenting behaviors, child abuse reporting, risk management, and how to keep themselves, the students, and the program safe. Otherwise known as “Covering Your ASSETS”, this is a thought provoking training, and a common comment afterwards is “WOW! I never thought about that!
After School Lesson Planning-
Lesson Planning is like a puzzle; once you incorporate all the pieces, the big picture become clear. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the different parts of an effective after school lesson plan, how to incorporate project-based learning, and most importantly how to incorporate state content standards. In addition, participants will learn how to connect fun activities with academic outcomes in a structured environment and learn strategies to make lesson planning more enjoyable.
After School Math-
Want to make math fun in your after school program? Want to be a Mathemagician? Through this interactive workshop, participants will learn hands-on and engaging math strategies to use with elementary school-age children, explore math content standards, and learn how to connect project-based math activities to grade and skill level expectations. Participants will have fun playing different math games and activities that they can walk away with. We know that math is not for everyone, but after this workshop you will feel comfortable bringing an array of new math activities to the youth in your program!
After School Literacy-
When youth here the word “Literacy” in the after school setting, they automatically think, “Boring”. This interactive workshop will help you create a community of readers in your after school program by introducing innovative ideas that produce fun and interactive literacy lesson plans. Participants will be given examples of how to transform ordinary lesson plans into something that will stay with the youth for the rest of their lives. Whether it is playing with clown shoes, putting on large glasses, or singing silly songs, you will walk away able to make your reading sessions fun and memorable.
After School Recreation-
Having problems getting youth to participate? Tired of playing the same old games? In this interactive workshop we will discuss the many possibilities one can put into place to run a safe and interactive recreation session in an after school setting. Let’s spend some time learning and discussing different strategies for ensuring that youth enjoy and get something out of this program component. Let’s make recreation a time where everyone can be a winner!
After School Science-
Be a mad SCIENTIST! Explore your world! This project-based approach makes science fun, easy and interesting. Youth will want nothing but hands-on science lessons and projects once participants implement some of the easy and exciting material from this workshop. Come and find the Einstein in you!
Performing Arts –
Discover the possibilities of incorporating the performing arts into your after school program through this interactive workshop. Whether you’re a singer, dancer, actor, or none of the above, participants will leave this workshop feeling confident about incorporating performing arts into their program. Come ready to shake it, sing it, and most importantly bring on the drama!
After School Technology-
Want to make an after school year book, create a short film or commercial for your program, or send out a cool newsletter with your youth’s pictures? Through this interactive project-based workshop, participants will walk away with the tools necessary to incorporate technology into their program, and most importantly, with the confidence to empower and activate their youth’s imagination and talent.
